Nigeria vs Benin: What Rohr said after Super Eagles’ 2-1 win over Squirrels

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has hailed the attitude of his players after they came from behind to beat Benin Republic 2-1 in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifier encounter on Wednesday.
DAILY POST had reported that the Super Eagles had to fight from a goal down, as the Squirrels opened scoring at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Stephane Sessegnon latched on a defensive error to make it 1-0.
Victor Osimhen made it 1-1 from the penalty spot, shortly before half time.
Samuel Kalu grabbed the winner, with a fine solo goal.

“Benin Republic are good team, we knew what they did in the Afcon but our attitude was good,” Rohr told reporters in his post-match press conference in Uyo.
“I’m happy with the result, to come back and win. Good to see competitions among the players.
“We are good everywhere in Nigeria, we had good hospitality in Asaba. But it feels good to be back in Uyo,” Rohr added.
Nigeria will now take on Lesotho on Sunday in their next match.

(Photo by Brenton EDWARDS / AFP) /Australian striker Sam Kerr will test herself at the top level of European football after impressing in her homeland and the United States as she joined Chelsea on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old Matildas captain — who scored five times in this year’s World Cup as the Australians reached the last 16 — signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Women’s Super League club.
Kerr, who has been a mainstay at Perth Glory since 2014 while also playing for Chicago Red Stars in the United States, will be available for selection from January.
According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald last week it is believed Kerr — who also attracted interest from Lyon, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid — will earn worth more than £467,000 ($600,000) a year, not including potential bonuses.
However, Kerr — the all-time leading scorer in the Australian and American leagues — said she felt Chelsea were a team that had laid a solid base for winning silverware.
“The WSL is the best league in Europe,” she said.
“I want team success and I don’t want it to come easy.
“I feel Chelsea have been building something special over the years and I want to be a part of that — I want to lift some trophies.”
Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said Kerr’s decision showed that they were a marquee club.
“The fact she chose Chelsea when she could have gone to any club in the world is a testament to the players and the staff here,” said Hayes.
“Sam has proved time and time again in the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League in the USA) that she is a prolific goalscorer.
“She’s won the golden boot many times and she’s a player that can make things happen, but she’s also a fantastic team player.
“She saw this as the best place for her to grow and take the next step in her career. That’s a wonderful compliment to us all.”
Kerr, who has twice been shortlisted for FIFA Player of the Year and is one of the sport’s biggest names, made her debut for Perth Glory at 15 and spent four years at the club before moving to Sydney FC.
She returned in 2014 for a second stint.
Known for her pace, agility and heading ability, as well as her trademark backflip goal celebrations, she has also played in the United States since 2013, first at Western New York Flash, then Sky Blue FC in New Jersey and Chicago.
Kerr is the ninth player from Australia to play in England, following the likes of Emily Gielnik (Liverpool), Tanya Oxtoby (Doncaster Belles) and Caitlin Friend (Notts County).

Navas’ injury adds to PSG coach Thomas Tuchel’s fitness woes, with Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, defenders Thomas Meunier and Thilo Kehrer and midfielder Ander Herrera all sidelined.
In-form striker Mauro Icardi was only fit enough for a place on the bench in Brittany.

Liverpool vs Man City: Arsene Wenger predicts EPL clash.

Legendary Arsenal manager, Arsene

Wenger has predicted this weekend’s English Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City.
Wenger believes the absence of Man City defender, Aymeric Laporte, who is yet to recover from a knee injury, could give Jurgen Klopp’s side a major advantage in their EPL title clash with Pep Guardiola’s men on Sunday.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Wenger said: “Well we have seen in recent years that they are very tight games.
“We know Man City will take the game to Liverpool, and that Liverpool will be very dangerous on the counter-attack.

“I personally feel they could not afford to lose Laporte, Manchester City.
“If you look at their results, they still play great football but they are a fractionally a bit more vulnerable defensively.

“And that could be a big handicap against Liverpool.”
Liverpool are currently six points ahead of Man City in the Premier League table ahead of the encounter.

EPL: Three first team players to leave Chelsea revealed.

Chelsea are prepared to sell three first-team players in January as manager Frank Lampard looks to shake up his squad at Stamford Bridge, The Telegraph reports.
Olivier Giroud, Pedro and Marcos Alonso are up for sell if the Blues receive worthwhile bids for them.

Giroud and Pedro’s contracts both expire in June 2020 and will be allowed to begin negotiations with foreign clubs in January.
Chelsea are willing to offload Giroud in January so they can recoup some money from him, rather than letting him leave on a free transfer in the summer.
Giroud has fallen down the pecking order since Lampard arrived last summer.

The Frenchman has started just one competitive match this season and wants regular football to give himself a chance of playing for France at Euro 2020.
Pedro has also seen himself become less important within the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard’s preference to play younger players, as well as the summer arrival of Christian Pulisic, has meant the Spaniard is no longer a regular starter.

Alonso has also been in and out of the Chelsea team and it may be time for him to call it quits on his Stamford Bridge career sooner rather than later.
Chelsea are said to be interested in Leicester’s Ben Chilwell next summer and that would leave Alonso seemingly ready to go.

Atletico’s Round Of 16 Qualification Delayed After Loss To Leverkusen.

(L-R) Atletico Madrid’s French midfielder Thomas Lemar, Atletico Madrid’s Spanish forward Alvaro Morata and Atletico Madrid’s Spanish midfielder Vitolo react after the UEFA Champions League Group D football match Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid in Leverkusen, western Germany on November 6, 2019.
INA FASSBENDER / AFP
Bayer Leverkusen belatedly breathed life into their Champions League campaign by recording their first points of the group stage with a 2-1 victory at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
A bizarre Thomas Partey own goal gave Leverkusen the lead on 41 minutes at the BayArena before Germany international Kevin Volland bagged a second shortly after the break.
Nadiem Amiri was sent off for a reckless challenge on Santiago Arias in the closing minutes with Alvaro Morata grabbing a consolation goal for Atletico in stoppage time.
Diego Simeone’s side fall three points behind Group D leaders Juventus after missing a chance to sew up qualification for the last 16 with two rounds to spare.
Leverkusen, who lost their opening three matches in Europe, are level on three points with Lokomotiv Moscow as both sides likely face the prospect of battling for a spot in the Europa League.

Juventus Join Bayern In Champions League Last 16.

Juventus’ Brazilian forward Douglas Costa celebrates with Juventus’ Argentine forward Paulo Dybala after scoring a goal during the UEFA Champions League group D football match between FC Lokomotiv Moscow and Juventus at Moscow’s RZD Arena stadium on November 6, 2019.
Dimitar DILKOFF / AFP
Substitute Douglas Costa’s injury-time winner secured Juventus their spot in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday after a 2-1 victory over Lokomotiv Moscow.
The Brazilian winger struck a magnificent, last-gasp solo goal for the Italian champions after Aleksei Miranchuk had canceled out Aaron Ramsey’s fourth-minute opener.
Juve is three points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of Group D ahead of the Spanish side’s game at Bayer Leverkusen, who will likely battle Lokomotiv for a Europa League place.
Lokomotiv coach Yuri Semin made one change from the weekend’s draw at Ufa as on-loan Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario came in for Murilo Cerqueira.
Juve’s Maurizio Sarri brought in seven new faces from Saturday’s Turin derby victory which included handing Wales midfielder Ramsey his first start for the club in the competition.
Ramsey, whose appearances for his new side this season have been restricted by injury, opened the scoring early after Lokomotiv goalkeeper Guilherme fumbled Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick.
Ronaldo fired his effort from the corner of the box straight at Guilherme who spilled the ball through his legs, allowing Ramsey to poke home from the goal-line on the greasy surface.

The Russians equalised eight minutes later after Juve took their foot off the gas.
Maciej Rybus whipped a cross towards Miranchuk who tapped in unopposed with Wojciech Szczesny on the floor after his header bounced back off the post.
The equaliser seemed to inspire Lokomotiv and they could have taken the lead less than 10 minutes later.
Miranchuk wasted a chance to double his tally after glancing his header over the crossbar from a chipped cross by Rifat Zhemaletdinov.
Ronaldo troubled Guilherme from a set-piece once again three minutes into the second half, the Brazil-born Russia international nervously parrying away the long-range effort.
Guilherme denied Ronaldo again nine minutes later sending the Portugal attacker’s powerful shot over the bar with an impressive save.
Ronaldo was substituted off for Paulo Dybala on 82 minutes with Sarri potentially keeping an eye on Sunday’s Serie A game against AC Milan, despite the former Real Madrid forward’s frustration at the decision.
Juve dominated the final moments and Costa clinched their sixth straight last 16 appearances with a tidy side-footed finish in injury time for his first Bianconeri goal since January.

Bayern Through To Champions League Last 16 After Olympiacos Win

Bayern Munich’s Polish forward Robert Lewandowski celebrates scoring the opening goal during the UEFA Champions League Group B football match FC Bayern Munich v Olympiakos in Munich, southern Germany, on November 6, 2019.
Christof STACHE / AFP
Managerless Bayern Munich reached the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday with two games to spare as Robert Lewandowski helped inspire a low-key 2-0 win over Olympiakos.
Lewandowski’s goal, his 21st in 17 games this season, was the highlight of a dull encounter at the Allianz Arena before substitute Ivan Perisic added a late second.
The victory ensures Group B leaders Bayern reach the knockout stage for the 12th straight season.
Interim coach Hansi Flick got off to a winning start having stepped in after Niko Kovac was sacked on Sunday following a 5-1 drubbing at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
Bayern expect to name a new coach by their next away game at Fortuna Duesseldorf on November 23, but Ajax coach Erik ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel have already ruled themselves out.
In the wake of Kovac’s sacking, sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic called for a “positive” display, but Bayern’s stars struggled to deliver.
Flick made two key changes by dropping both Thiago Alcantara and Philippe Coutinho, both of whom were poor at Frankfurt.
Leon Goretzka took Alcantara’s place in midfield, with Mueller replacing Coutinho and Javi Martinez playing at center-back instead of Jerome Boateng, who was sent off against Eintracht.
But Bayern still needed more than an hour to finally breach Olympiakos’ defence.
Just a month ago, Bayern trounced Tottenham 7-2 in north London with Serge Gnabry scoring four goals, but the German champions could not match that display.
Their first clear chance came when winger Kingsley Coman cut inside with 33 minutes gone but fired at Olympiakos goalkeeper Jose Sa.
The ‘keeper then denied Mueller moments later while right-back Benjamin Pavard headed off the post on the stroke of half-time.
Bayern had a better start to the second half as Goretzka’s header forced Sa into a good save.
Lewandowski broke the deadlock on 69 minutes when he flicked Kingsley Coman’s low cross past Sa.
The second goal was created by two second-half substitutes as Corentin Tolisso’s ball found its way to Perisic, who lashed the ball into the net.

Unai Emery speaks on Mourinho replacing him after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Vitoria.

Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, has insisted that “I am the coach”, when asked about Jose Mourinho replacing him at the Emirates.
Emery’s situation at the club is becoming increasingly uncertain, following a 1-1 draw with Vitoria Guimaraes in the Europa League on Wednesday night.
It is the fourth consecutive fixture the Gunners have taken the lead and still failed to win, after conceding very late.
Mourinho is one of the managers linked with Arsenal, should incase the board decide to sack Emery.
When asked if he was worried about the Portuguese replacing him, Emery told reporters after the Vitoria match: “I am the coach”
The former PSG coach was also quizzed about his side’s habit of throwing away leads.
“Our objective this evening was to have a clean sheet. We need to improve defensively and be strong in that moment.
“We are using each match to achieve that. We didn’t achieve that against Vitoria Guimaraes.
“In that competition we’re taking good results, taking a lot of goals and not conceding a lot of goals,” Emery replied.

Messi to make Argentina return.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi was called up by Argentina on Thursday for friendly games against Brazil and Uruguay next month.
Messi has not played for Argentina since he was sent off against Chile in their victorious third-place play-off match in the Copa America on July 7.
The striker was then handed a three-month suspension for comments he made after the game, in which he accused CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, of corruption.
In Messi’s absence, Argentina has played four friendlies, drawing against Chile and Germany while beating Mexico and Ecuador.
They face Brazil in Saudi Arabia on November 15 and then Uruguay in Israel on November 18.
Messi has endured an injury-affected start to the season after hurting his foot in August and then his thigh in September.
But his recovery has coincided with a return to form for Barcelona, who have won their last seven consecutive games in all competitions.
Messi scored twice in a 5-1 win over Real Valladolid on Tuesday.

Premier League considers ban on heading for youths amid dementia fear: reports

Premier League
The Premier League has written to its clubs to tell them they are considering whether to ban some academy players from heading a football amid dementia fears.
According to British media reports on Wednesday, Premier League chiefs have emailed all 20 top-flight teams in the wake of a recent study into the link between football and dementia.
Last week, a report published and titled ‘Football’s Influence on Lifelong Health and Dementia Risk’ found footballers were three-and-a-half times more likely to suffer from degenerative brain conditions than the general population.
The research looked at 7,676 Scottish footballers born between 1900 and 1976 who were matched with 23,000 people from similar areas and backgrounds.
It led to the Scottish Football Association considering a ban on children under 12 heading the ball and former player Lenny Johnrose, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in March 2017, called for children aged 14 and under to be banned from heading.
The United States is the only country in the world which has a similar ban. Children aged 10 and under are not allowed to head the ball in games or practice, while there are limits placed in training sessions for 11-to-13-year-olds.
In the wake of the study, led by consultant neuropathologist Dr Willie Stewart of Glasgow University, Premier League interim chief executive Richard Masters is looking into the latest findings to decide if any age groups should be banned from heading.
The FA’s independently chaired medical and football advisory group does not yet believe there is enough evidence at this stage to make changes to the way modern-day football is played, at any level of the game.
It has reissued best practice coaching advice in youth football, which advices limiting repetitive heading practice and using age-appropriate balls and softer items like balloons or sponge balls.

Villarreal defender Moreno says Super Eagles star Samuel Chukwueze reminds him of Mane

Moreno pays compliment to his Villarreal teammate Chukwueze.
Villarreal left-back Alberto Moreno has revealed that Super Eagles star Samuel Chukwueze reminds him of his former Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane.
Moreno who played seven years at Liverpool was teammates with Senegalese forward Mane.
Now at Villarreal, the 27-old left back has used his former teammate Mane to pay compliment to his current teammate Chukwueze.
“Chukwueze is very good. I followed him last year because I had him in the Comunio (football manager) and he gave me many points,” Moreno told AS.
That’s why I started following him again. He is a super incisive player, fast, you don’t know where he is going to go out, and he is very strong, precise in his play. He has everything.
“He reminds me a lot of Sadio Mane. I have seen them both in training and I can tell you that he reminds me a lot of him.”
Chukwueze broke out last season at Villarreal and scored nine goals in all competition in his debut season.

He hasn’t been explosive this season as expected but has managed two goals so far.

Alberto PIZZOLI / AFP
Gonzalo Higuain suffered a knock to his head as Juventus were held 1-1 in a bruising clash at lowly Lecce on Saturday.
The defending champions are now in danger of being overtaken by Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A table.
Juventus have 23 points from nine games, but could be overtaken by Antonio Conte’s Inter who are two points behind before hosting Parma later on Saturday.
Argentina forward Higuain collided with Lecce’s Brazilian goalkeeper Gabriel towards the end of the game in southern Italy leaving him with a cut to his forehead but continued to play on despite his heavily-bandaged head.
The 31-year-old sat down on the pitch after the game after suffering from dizziness and was stretchered off.
“Gonzalo is having stitches,” said coach Maurizo Sarri.
“He is conscious, answering questions in a clear way,” he added.
Both goals came from penalties with Dybala’s strike from the spot after 50 minutes cancelled out by Marco Mancosu’s effort six minutes later as the promoted southerners grabbed their first point at home this season.
It was a damaging encounter for the champions with Miralem Pjanic and Rodrigo Bentancur also taking knocks.
Juventus rested Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo after Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League win over Lokomotiv Moscow, and ahead of two Serie A matches in four days next week.
“Ronaldo was tired both physically and mentally, so it would not have helped to make this journey,” said Sarri.
“When a player expresses his fatigue, it was only right to give him a rest.”
In-form Dybala
But Dybala, who scored both goals against the Russians, started up front alongside Higuain, with Federico Bernardeschi just behind the Argentine strike duo.
Maurizio Sarri gave starts to Emre Can and Danilo with Blaise Matuidi and Juan Cuadrado both named on the bench.
Promoted Lecce, a side from the heel of Italy, are struggling above the relegation zone, but managed to pull through for a precious point despite being dominated by the visitors.
Slovenian midfielder Zan Majer forced a save from Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after just two minutes.
Dybala was targeted early by the Lecce defenders with Luca Rossettini and Marco Calderoni picking up yellow cards early for fouling the Argentine forward.
Higuain looked as he had scored the opener after a quarter of an hour finishing off Alex Sandro’s cross, but his effort was ruled for offside.
Gabriel denied Dybala and Bernardeschi then failed to connect with a Danilo cross just before the break.
But Dybala put Juventus ahead five minutes into the second half with his sixth goal in five games.
But captain Mancosu pulled his side back level from the spot six minutes later after a Matthijs De Ligt handball.
Gabriel denied Higuain on the line after 68 minutes and Leonardo Bonucci also sent over as the Turin giants pushed forward unsuccessfully for the winner.
Pjanic was forced off with a muscle injury with Sami Khedira coming on, with Adrien Rabiot replacing Can.
And in a late scramble in front of the Lecce goal Gabriel caught Higuain’s forehead with his elbow.
The Argentine continued to play, before collapsing to the pitch after the whistle.
“We didn’t control our lead well at all, so I didn’t like any of that,” said Sarri.
“We created many scoring opportunities and didn’t take them, so there was a lack of determination and clinical edge.”
Inter host Parma later on Saturday with Genoa playing their first game under new coach Thiago Motta at home against Mario Balotelli’s Brescia.

EPL: Pulisic breaks Chelsea record with hat-trick against Burnley

EPL: Pulisic breaks Chelsea record with hat-trick against Burnley

Christian Pulisic became Chelsea’s youngest ever hat-trick scorer, after starring in their 4-2 win over Burnley on Saturday evening.
The American forward scored his first three goals for the Blues at Turf Moor, after making his first Premier League start since August.
In doing so, at just 21 years and 38 days old, Pulisic broke the record for youngest player to net a hat-trick for the club.
Tammy Abraham became the youngest hat-trick scorer in Chelsea history just last month, when he scored three in a 5-2 Premier League win over Wolves.
The England international was 21 years and 347 days old at the time.
Pulisic told reporters at Turf Moor: “I’m sure he’s not going to be too happy about that.
“But he’s a team player and this is a very special day for me.”
