According to the mother of the baby, Mrs. Blessing, she had attended the Church before she got married and became pregnant. She said after she was delivered of the baby, Pastor Charity asked her to get prepared for them to go to mountain for prayer. She was instructed not to tell her husband and after the prayer that she will raise money for her to go back to her village in Akwa Ibom State to start a business.
Mrs. Blessing said that while she got prepared for the prayer, the Pastor collected her baby from her and handed over to a woman, who later turned out to be a child merchant, one Mrs. Happiness Ejikeme and she escaped.
She said when she did not see her baby, she raised alarm as the Pastor was forcing her to go back to her village. She then informed her husband, who contacted the Baale of the community.
Pastor Charity Okpara and the other accomplices namely Mrs. Happiness Ejikeme and Mercy Nwokike, were rounded up and paraded by the Police where they made confessional statements.

During interrogation, Pastor Charity admitted that she sold the baby for N350,000 to Mrs. Happiness and collected a commission of N25,000. She said that the mother of the baby, Mrs. Blessing was aware of the transaction but later changed her mind because she did not get all her money as promised her.
When she was asked why she did not give her the money when she was being taken to her village, Pastor Charity said that she kept the money in her account.
Mrs. Happiness Ejikeme also admitted that she bought the baby from Pastor Charity and paid her in full before they handed the baby to her and she in turn sold it to one Mrs. Mercy for N800,000. She said she did not tell the buyer that it was a stolen child.

This was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana at the State Command. He said they were caught, interrogated and they confessed committing the crime and would be charged to Court after the conclusion of investigation. He said that the baby has been handed over to her parents.

Nigerians to pay more for data, calls as telcos apply new VAT.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTONS) said it will start implementing the country’s new 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) increase from Saturday, February 1 2020.

“Further to the assent of the Finance Bill by President Muhammadu Buhari…which reviewed the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 5% to 7.5%, ALTONS wishes to notify consumers that our members will begin applying the new VAT rate on all purchased telecommunication products and services with effect from 1st of February 2020,” ALTONS said in a statement jointly signed by its chairman Gbenga Adebayo and head of operations Gbolahan Awonuga.

Consequently, the 7.5% increased VAT will reflect in the charges of phone calls, text messages and data for internet in Nigeria.
The telecommunications operators assured Nigerians of tariff transparency and quality service delivery.
Buhari on Monday, January 13 signed the finance bill into law. He said the bill was “specially designed to support its implementation and to create a truly enabling environment for business and investment by the private sector.”

The president also said signing the bill will reform Nigeria’s tax laws to align with global best practices and support micro, small and medium scale enterprises in line with his administration’s Ease of Doing Business Reforms.
Buhari said the finance bill was “specially designed to support its implementation and to create a truly enabling environment for business and investment by the private sector.”

Buhari noted that the new law will incentivize investments in infrastructure and capital markets and raise revenues.
The Nigeria president commended members of the Ninth National Assembly for the passage of the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin PSC Amendment Bill, and the Finance Bills, he said are both vital to the successful implementation of the 2020 Budget.

Nigerian comedian Basketmouth Tenders Apology Over Insensitive Rape Joke

Ace Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth some days ago faced backlash after he was unveiled along some other Nigerian celebrities as an advocate for the European Union in Nigeria’s campaign against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.
Many social media users reacted negatively to Basketmouth being one of those chosen to be an advocate for the EU’s cause on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV).
According to many, the comedian is a rape apologist who has in times past made jokes about rape and therefore not fit to represent women and the issues they face.
SGBV Campaign
Advocates for the SGBV Campaign
Back in 2014, the comedian made a joke about Nigerian women deserving to be raped if they refuse to have sex by the second date. Following the backlash that came with this, he later apologised for the insensitive joke. Fast track to 2019, Basketmouth made an appearance on The Dangerous World of Comedy by Larry Charles and when asked about the rape joke he made on social media, he revealed that people like such jokes and it helps to sell show tickets.
Following the outrage that trailed Basketmouth as an ambassador for the cause against sexual and gender based violence, he was removed from the list.
In a followup to this, the award-winning laugh maestro has now released a statement. Taking to his Instagram page, he shared a photo collage of a number of women, including his daughter, his wife, Busola Dakolo, and more. He accompanied the image with the caption:
“Almost every morning in the blogs, on the news, there’s a picture of a man sitting on the floor pleading, the caption is usually in the line of ‘its the devils handwork’ and the topic is from underage defilement, rape or brutality against a woman or minor. I live in this same world with my most prized possessions my wife, my two daughters, my sisters and women who have built me into the man I am.
I was recently presented an opportunity to create awareness on the efforts of the EU to bring support to fighting this scourge, it was a no-brainer for me. I refused any compensation for it and volunteered to lend my voice because….its our fight, it’s not for the EU…its for my girls’ future.
Unfortunately, a few years ago I shared up a Facebook post that I thought was shedding light through humor to the entitled crude and very present behavioral patterns of some African men who equate spending to sexual favors, but I also realized then that women actually have to face this daily and its harrowing and I deeply apologized for it
I sincerely pray that this does not take away from the most important fight of our lives….the fight to secure our future…because the girl child is our future. I strongly appreciate the EU for this amazing platform to improve our lot, as long as the message reaches the ears of those who need it, then it’s a win. To every woman – our mothers, sisters, lovers, wives, crowns, supporters, prayer partners, foundation, life…. thank you for being who you are. So many times you sacrifice who you are for a man to become who he wants to be. It’s time we all love and and also support you like you do us….cos in your light, we all shine
Bless.”
Asides Basketmouh, there are current calls for the removal of Nigerian rapper, M.I Abaga and media personality, Uti Nwachukwu as influencers/advocates as well. M.I Abaga had tweeted that after watching The Larry Charles documentary on about Nigerian culture on rape and homphobia, he stands with comedians joking about anything because it is their job to find the funny in pain.
He was however slammed that there is nothing funny about rape as anybody who jokes about it lacks character and whoever supports such jokes is of bad behaviour.
Uti Nwachukwu on the other hand is said to constantly body shame women on his social media accounts.

HIV/AIDS is still a serious danger globally.

HIV/AIDS: Nigeria pledges $12m to Global Fund
THIS year’s World AIDS Day was marked on Sunday, December 1, 2019 with the theme: “Communities Make The Difference”.
It focused attention on the roles that communities have played and will continue to play in ensuring that this deadly disease is contained.
It is estimated that about 37.9 million people are infected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, HIV/AIDS, with about 770,000 AIDS deaths recorded in 2018.
Two-thirds of the cases were documented in Africa and the Middle East, mostly because of lack of adequate education and access to care.

Due to the subsisting stigma attached to this scourge in these parts of the world, many people are still afraid to submit themselves to HIV/AIDS tests. The tragedy of this is that most people only get to know their status when they fall sick and can no longer be helped.
However, the current picture of things in Nigeria is something to cheer about. The National Action for the Control of HIV/AIDS, NACA, has disclosed that prevalence has dropped from 2.8 per cent in previous years to 1.4 per cent, representing roughly 1.9 million people.

According to Mrs. Akudo Ikpeazu, a Director of NACA in a television programme, about 800,000 Nigerians are still outside the treatment basket, and this is where the bulk of the AIDS fatalities usually comes from.
It would appear that the most daunting challenge to the arrest of the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria is getting people to voluntarily go for tests. Volition is emphasised, since it is a universally-approved practice never to force anyone to get tested.
Once a case is established after a test, NACA assures that it has established a grassroots-based mechanism for plugging those who need treatment into immediate care, which is free and generally available.
Unfortunately, despite strenuous efforts by researches all over the world, the cure or vaccine for HIV/AIDS has not been found.
However, early detection and use of approved anti-retroviral drugs have succeeded in sustaining so many infected persons that almost everybody has come to the realisation that HIV infection is no longer a “death sentence”.
This is why this year’s theme is so central and relevant. The greatest weapons against the spread of HIV/AIDS are in awareness, testing and getting on the anti-retroviral medication.

There is a need for the community to mobilise its organs, such as the religious leaders, traditional rulers, the schools, media and advocacy groups to put more effort in getting people to embrace voluntary testing.
One way of ensuring success is to do away with the stigma associated with being infected.
Once the community closes ranks against this scourge, it can be contained even before a cure or vaccine is perfected.

Extreme poverty may hit Nigerians – World Bank warns

The World Bank has warned the present administration that the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty may increase by more than 30 million by 2030.
The Bank warned that Nigeria will be home to 25 per cent of the world’s destitute people if the government fails to revive economic growth and create jobs.
It gave the warning in its 2019

Nigeria Economic Update Report, which was released on Monday.
The World Bank urged President Muhammadu Buhari to increase domestic revenue, remove trade restrictions and improve the predictability of economic policy.
It also advised the Nigerian government to remove expensive fuel subsidies, adding that
failure to take actions would see more Nigerians falling into extreme poverty
It stressed that Nigeria could slide back into recession if crude prices fell by 25 per cent to $50 a barrel.
The report read: “Economic and demographic projections highlight the urgent need for reform
“With population growth (estimated at 2. 6 per cent) outpacing economic growth in a context of weak job creation , per capita income is falling . Today , an estimated 100 million Nigerians live on less than $1. 90 per day.
“Close to 80 per cent of poor households are in northern Nigeria, while employment creation and income gains have been concentrated on central and southern Nigeria.
“Nigeria’s economy is expected to grow by 2. 1 per cent in 2020 and 2021, compared to an annual population growth rate of 2. 6 per cent.
“Nigeria’ s economy is recovering gradually from the 2016 recession, with growth projected to pick up from 1. 9 per cent in 2018 to two per cent in 2019
“But the projected growth outlook is vulnerable to external and domestic risks , including geopolitical and trade tensions that may affect inflows of private investment.
“Nigeria has the opportunity to advance reforms to mitigate these risks amid growing public demand for greater economic opportunities.
“President Muhammadu Buhari should increase domestic revenue , remove trade restrictions and improve the predictability of economic policy.

“Nigerian government should remove expensive fuel subsidies and reduce lending to targeted sectors that crowd out banks. Failure to take actions would see more Nigerians falling into extreme poverty.
“The cost of inaction is significant. Under a business -as- usual scenario, where Nigeria maintains the current pace of growth and employment levels , by 2030, the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty could increase by more than 30 million,” the Bank warned.

2020 UTME: Reps reacts to ‘no NIN, no JAMB’ policy.

The House of Representatives has urged the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to extend the use of compulsory National Identification Number (NIN) in the conduct of examinations till 2021.
This followed a motion moved by Rep. Zainab Gimba (APC-Borno) under Matters of Urgent Public Importance at plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday.
The House said the extension would allow more time to better sensitise prospective candidates on the NIN.
Gimba, moving the motion, explained that the compulsory use of prospective candidates‘ data with NIMC database would facilitate the data capture of candidates for JAMB.
She said this would curb incidences of multiple registration and other forms of malpractices perpetrated in the UTME process.
The lawmaker, however, expressed concern that many prospective candidates from remote locations in the country might not be able to register for the UTME due to non-registration with NIMC.
She also expressed concern that the notice given by JAMB “is too sudden and not sufficient to allow all prospective UTME candidates to be captured by NIMC.
“Sometime this year, an official of the NIMC disclosed that less than 20 per cent of Nigerians are captured in NIMC’S database.
“Although there has been massive turnout of Nigerians to be captured by NIMC, most have been hindered by infrastructural challenges like poor internet network, power failure and sometimes inadequate manpower or equipment to attend to them.”

The house, however, urged NIMC to establish more registration centres to accommodate the growing number of prospective candidates for the UTME.
Furthermore, the representatives directed the house committees on Tertiary Education and Services and National identity Management to Identify the challenges in capturing Nigerians.
“This is with a view to tackle (the challenges of capturing) them and increase funding (where) necessary,” the house observed.

Hate Speech Bill is Time bomb on journalism profession in Nigeria — Ohaja

Hate Speech Bill: Time bomb on journalism profession in Nigeria — Ohaja

By Ugochukwu Alaribe – Umuahia

Head of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Dr. Edith Ugochi Ohaja, has described the proposed bill seeking to place the death penalty on anyone convicted of hate speech to a time bomb on the journalism profession in Nigeria.
Ohaja said she could not believe that the National Assembly is deliberating on a bill that provides for capital punishment for the expression of opinions, and described it a total misplacement of priorities.

She challenged Journalists in Nigeria to rise up to the occasion and prove that the Nigerian media which stood firm during General Sani Abacha led military regime is still alive to defend justice,  truth and human rights.
In her words, “This is a country where rampaging herdsmen, bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists seem to be treated with kid gloves. One would have called this a misplacement of priorities if the move wasn’t so sinister and it speaks to the baseness of the current National Assembly.

“By reviving this bill and seeking to set up a whole agency for so-called hate speech, the government is no longer hiding its dictatorial inclinations.  Besides the social media, blogs, and citizen journalism websites, traditional media remain the platforms for publicizing people’s expressions of opinions and helping them to gain traction. So they will be prime targets or those whose views are publicized in them will be.
“I don’t know the full provisions of the bill but I imagine there will be punitive fines against corporate bodies, like the media, that are seen as fora for the dissemination of “hate speech”.

“The sad thing in Nigeria is that the media have not been robust enough in withstanding the tyranny of the present regime. Perhaps, the revival of this bill will serve as a wakeup call to them that the government is trampling on everyone’s rights and eroding freedom of the press.
“In fact, this might be the time for the media to redeem their image by championing the resistance against this kind of move and other obnoxious policies of this government. In the time of Abacha, they did it. Hopefully, the recent years of questionable democracy have not turned them into a hopelessly complacent and conniving lot.”
Speaking further, Ohaja said, “The level of ineptitude, sectionalism and other multifarious failings of the government are constantly drawing public ire and that is why the government is desperate to muzzle free expression of ideas and opinions.  And the hypocrisy is glaring because it is the executive arm of government and the judiciary it has kept under its thumb that will decide what is hate speech and who to prosecute.
She urged Nigerians to resist the passage of this bill as it will kill what is left of the country’s fledgling democracy.

Xenophobia: South African Artists Kick Against Inclusion Of Burna Boy At The 'Africa Unite' Concert.

Burna Boy
Burna Boy

Some musicians in South Africa under the aegis of Tshwane Collective have sent a petition to the minister of arts and culture, kicking against the inclusion of Burna Boy in the 'Africa Unite' concert scheduled for 23 and 24 November.
The Africans Unite concerts, a response to recent xenophobia in the country is organised by Play Network Africa, based in Nigeria, in partnership with Phambili Media SA and appears to enjoy the support of South Africa’s department of arts and culture.
It will feature, along with Burna Boy, artistes such as Kwesa and Jidenna. The first concert will hold at Hillcrest Quarry in Cape Town on 23 November and the second at Sun Arena, Time Square in Pretoria.
However, the Tshwane Collective questioned the exclusion of local artists and Burna Boy’s invitation to perform at the concert, accusing the African Giant of inciting hatred against South Africa, in the wake of the xenophobic attacks.
“Whoever may have deemed that the country needs a PR exercise of this nature would have done so largely as a result of the callous, misleading and unwarranted incitement by this very artist. Not only did he spread falsehoods through his extensive platform, he literally incited violence and hate.
He further promised to inflict his own violence on locals before giving your government an ultimatum which you seem to have received and succumbed to”, the group said in the letter to Nathi Mthethwa, minister of art and culture.
The department of culture has however distanced itself from the concert and said that it’s logo had been used “erroneously” on posters advertising the event, Times Live reported.
“The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture wishes to dispel the untrue information currently being spread on social media, that it is funding the Africans Unite Concert featuring the artist known as Burna Boy. It is unfortunate that the department’s logo was erroneously used on the poster advertising the event,” spokesperson Asanda Magaqa told TshisaLIVE.
Asanda said that the department had not allocated or granted funding for the event. “The department wishes to reiterate that it has not allocated or granted any funding to the event in question and any reports to the contrary are entirely false.”

Regulation of social media threat to freedom of speech —Shehu Sani

Says President Buhari once victim of
The Senator that represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, Comrade Shehu Sani, has described the bill on the regulation of social media as a serious threat and danger to freedom of speech and expression.
Comrade Sani in a statement said the quest to regulate the social media is a grand plan to silence critics and dissenting voices.

The lawmaker who is also the Executive Director African Centre for Peace and Development recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari was as once a victim of abuse of power and as such, he must be conscious of his place in history and legacies on human rights and the rule of law.
Sani who noted that any law aimed at limiting the rights and freedoms of citizens to express their views is aimed at building a tower of tyranny, however urged the parliament not to aide and abet the executive desire to emasculate freedom of speech.
According to the lawmaker: “it is ironic for a Government that came to power on the promise of protecting the fundamental rights of Nigerians is now reneging and sliding towards totalitarianism.
“Silencing dissent endangers democracy. Combatting hate speech is a smokescreen to annihilating free speech.
“Disobedience to court orders demonizes a country and criminalizes a Government.
“Nigeria’s Democracy is threatened by the authoritarian tendencies of the people in power.

“Sowore and all those still held against a valid court order for their release should be freed.
“Theres a cloud of fear over our country and the moral flag of our democracy is lowered to half staff. Theres the urgency to defend our freedom and democracy against those standing against it.”

Anti Hate Speech Bill An Abuse Of Legislative Process – Atiku.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has said that the bill being conceived by the National Assembly to tackle hate speeches and other social media related contents is an abuse of legislative process.
In a statement on Tuesday, the former Vice President said the bill is one which will violate Nigerians’ constitutionally guaranteed right to Freedom of Speech.
He stated that the bill sponsored by Senator Sabi Abdullahi is obnoxious, adding that the lawmakers should rather make laws to tackle pressing domestic challenges across the country.
“Atiku Abubakar wishes to sound a note of caution to those now toying with the idea of an Anti Hate Speech Bill, with punishment for supposed Hate Speech to be death by hanging. The contemplation of such laws is in itself not just hate speech, but an abuse of the legislative process that will violate Nigerians’ constitutionally guaranteed right to Freedom of Speech.

Atiku urges those behind this Bill to awake to the fact that Nigeria’s democracy has survived its longest incarnation, because those who governed this great nation between 1999 and 2015 never toyed with this most fundamental of freedoms. It is prudent to build upon the tolerance inherited from those years and not shrink the democratic space to satisfy personal and group interests.

Freedom of Speech was not just bestowed to Nigerians by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), it is also a divine right given to all men by their Creator. History is littered with the very negative unintended consequences that result when this God given right is obstructed by those who seek to intimidate the people rather than accommodate them.
We should be reminded that history does not repeat itself. Rather, men repeat history. And often, to disastrous consequences.

Nigeria presently has too many pressing concerns. We are now the world headquarters for extreme poverty as well as the global epicentre of out-of-school children. Our economy is smaller than it was in 2015, while our population is one of the world’s fastest growing. We have retrogressed in the Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International, from the position we held four years ago, and our Human Development Indexes are abysmally low.
It therefore begs the question: should we not rather make laws to tackle these pressing domestic challenges, instead of this Bill, which many citizens consider obnoxious?

Again, Atiku cautions that we must prioritise our challenges ahead of the whims and caprices of those who do not like to hear the inconvenient truth. Stop this folly and focus on issues that matter to Nigerians.”
